A large, 2-bladed Finochietto retractor is a self-retaining rib spreader primarily used during cardiothoracic and trauma surgeries. Its main function is to hold open a large incision in the chest, spreading the ribs to grant surgeons a wide, hands-free view of the thoracic cavity.

Cardiac surgery:

The retractor provides necessary access to the heart and surrounding blood vessels for procedures like coronary artery bypass or valve replacements.

Lung surgery:

During lung resections or other pulmonary procedures, the Finochietto is used to spread the ribs to allow access to the lungs.

Emergency trauma:

It is critical in trauma surgery for treating severe chest injuries, as it provides rapid access to vital organs for life-saving interventions.

Thoracotomy:

The retractor is specifically designed for thoracotomy, the surgical procedure of opening the chest wall.

Esophageal surgery:

A large retractor can also be used in more extensive procedures involving the esophagus.

  • Additional Information

The Finochietto retractor is a self-retaining device with two broad blades that are inserted into an incision between the ribs. A ratchet or crank mechanism is then used to gradually spread the ribs apart. This creates an open, hands-free field for the surgeon to work in. Key features include:

    Secure grip:
Fenestrated (bladed with openings) blades grip the ribs to provide a secure hold.

    Minimized trauma:
Blades have smooth, rounded edges to prevent unnecessary tissue damage.

    Adjustable spread:
The instrument's crank and lock system allows for precise control over the degree of retraction.
